The Red Soil captivated me every time I saw photos of Central Australia. The Outback was the place I really wanted to visit in Oz during my first school holidays as an exchange teacher. Uluru, of course, was a must on the list. Just getting there, however, proved to be almost as surreal as seeing Uluru’s spiritual grounds and the monolith itself.
One minute I’d look out the car window transfixed by the soil and its various shades, and then the next I’d see some wacky vehicle that looked like it drove off the set of The Hangover 3. The Stuart Highway didn’t disappoint either since you’d definitely see the hard core, badass Road Warrioresque machines.

Tell it like it is??
Not sure what this van does — Kangaroo crossing warning sign maker? Kangaroo road kill picker upper?
Lots of miles ahead….
LOL-I-BOBS! I can’t help it….I also laugh when I see that sign ‘I wish all girls were as dirty as this’ Or ‘I wish my wife was a dirty as this’ or ‘Honk if you like it this dirty!’ – it’s the smut in me…
I wish that all roads in Jakarta where as empty as those in your pictures. It took 2.5 hrs back from the airport late last night…Grrrrrrr!! 🙂 XXX
I had to have a photo of the smut truck — it was so hilarious, especially with the smiley face. Also, you sometimes don’t see anyone on the road. We drove and entire day and didn’t see one other car — kind of creepy, really. Anyway, it was always good to see another human being out and about.
I can’t believe you were in 2.5 hours of traffic — Ugghhh. I hope you had a container in the new orange bag in case you had to pee! 🙂 xxxxxx
kangaroo crossing sign warning maker had me in a fit of giggles.
Thanks Rebecca! It had me laughing, too since I could never really figure out what the van was for. Glad it made you laugh 🙂 Cheers, Steph
I was just in the outback as well! I also am from Minnesota. I adore your blog, it’s super inspiring for me. I just started my own travel blog (I use travel blog loosely because I plan on having it having non-travel related content as well). However, I am only 17. I would love any advice you have for me because I look up to you so much! Here’s a link! https://butnotlost.wordpress.com/2016/01/20/preface/
Again, adore your blog thanks for writing!
Thank you so much for the kind words, and yeah, Minnesota! I’m happy if Travel Oops can inspire you. Travel, misadventures, and laughter, in my opinion, are essential to living a life to the fullest.
Isn’t the Outback beautiful? So glad you’ve been able to explore Oz. Congratulations on starting your own blog — follow your heart with it and write/post about what speaks to you and what you are passionate about. (It looks as if that is what you are already doing!) Write for yourself and your blog first — try not to worry too much about the “likes” and follows. Just like your travels, you will go far!
